What’s going wrong in the modern world when increasing numbers of people are falling prey to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues? Much of the time, we’re forgetting the importance of our own self-love, self-respect and self-worth.
We’re all stretched for time these days in a hectic world full of work, financial and family commitments. This means it’s so important to make the most of the precious time you do have, and not waste it. Maybe life isn’t going quite the way you planned right now. Try to make a habit of it and jot down in your diary a few breathing spaces each week where you’ll make time for yourself, and stick to it. Soon, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it. Visualize these times as a colourful garden or a private retreat just for you in the middle of a busy day. Treat yourself to a well-deserved gift, go and have some time out with friends or simply by yourself, and let others take on some of your responsibilities for a change. It’s okay to let go sometimes. Above all, be kind to yourself and you’ll find that you’ve suddenly got more capacity to be kind to others.If we’re stressed inside, we can become moody and be discouraging on the outside and that will reflect in our experiences with other people.
Self-love is about finding inner peace, which includes learning how to forgive, letting go of the past and accepting yourself fully for who you are.
Just like self-love, self-respect is vital to your well-being. Do you tend to follow the crowd, or do you go your own way as an individual? Are you living your dream, or is there something missing? What would make YOU happy? Take time to think about your own goals, and don’t just accept those that are written for you by society.
We all have hidden strengths and talents, but we’re so often caught up in the day-to-day whirlwind of life that we just can’t see them. Taking time out of your routine will help you identify these skills and realize where you really want to go in life. Just because we all have stresses and obligations doesn’t mean we can’t make something better out of our lifestyles, even if it means diverting from the usual, expected state of things and going off the beaten track.
